Resumen

This study examines how personal comfort systems (PCS) support thermal adaptation among adults with intellectual disabilities living in energy-poor households in Chile. Participants (n = 8) in two identical social-housing units completed two in-home field campaigns: winter (June–August 2023; 10 weeks) and summer (December 2023–March 2024; 14 weeks). The study combined an adapted daily point-in-time thermal comfort questionnaire, continuous indoor dry-bulb temperature monitoring (15 min), and pre-/ post-season interviews. Indoor conditions frequently fell outside reference comfort thresholds (92.6% of winter temperatures < 21.5°C; 64.1% of summer temperatures > [...]

: Designing efficient and sustainable buildings is an essential focus in architecture and engineering, often tackled through various different optimization methods. However, the complexities of the design process and its multiple criteria pose challenges. In this sense, multi-objective optimization has emerged as a valuable tool for integrating these diverse requirements. This study synthesizes research on multi-objective optimization in building design, identifying key characteristics, and evaluating the correlation between its variables and objectives. A literature review was conducted to assess the main studies about this type of optimization, determining the most common variables and [...]

Resumen

The construction sector, a major contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, offers considerable potential for climate change mitigation through the substitution of traditional building materials with timber. While engineered wood products like cross-laminated timber and glulam have gained attention for structural applications, the use of lower-grade wood and industrial residues for durable, non-structural construction elements remain underexplored. This study evaluates the opportunities and challenges of incorporating low-grade wood into construction, specifically assessing potential climate benefits, mapping material flows along the wood value chain, and [...]

Resumen

Adaptive façades, also known as climate-adaptive building shells (CABSs), couldmake a significant contribution towards reducing the energy consumption of buildings and their environmental impacts. There is extensive research on glazed adaptive façades, mainly due to the available technology for glass materials. The technological development of opaque adaptive façades has focused on variable-thermal-resistance envelopes, and the simulation of this type of façade is a challenging task that has not been thoroughly studied. The aim of this study was to configure and validate a simplified office model that could be used for simulating an [...]
